Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is A Fund For Women?
A: AFFW is a "women's fund" that makes a direct difference in the lives of women and girls in our community.
Q: How does it make a difference?
A: We identify needs of women and girls that are not adequately funded by traditional charities and foundations. We then award grants to meet these challenges.
Q: How did the AFFW get started?
A: It was established in 1993 by founder Jane Coleman and original donors who raised "seed money" of $100,000 for a permanent endowment fund.
Q: Is there really a need for just girls and women, rather than everyone?
A: Some very well-respected studies and statistics demonstrate that programs dedicated to the needs of women and girls do not receive adequate funding from traditional funding sources. Programs serving both sexes frequently leave women and girls short-changed.
Q: Who gives to A Fund For Women?
A: Philanthropists of all economic levels and interests who make a difference by combining many donations into a few focused areas of need.
Q: Who manages the Fund?
A: We are a collaborative arm of the Madison Community Foundation, where the AFFW Endowment and Passthrough funds are managed.
Q: How does AFFW decide where grant monies go?
A: Using our proactive grant-making model, volunteer grant committee members personally research and identify needs specific to the Madison and Dane County communities.
Q: How many grants have been given to date?
A: AFFW has awarded 77 grants over its 15 year history.
Q: What kinds of organizations have received AFFW grants?
A: A wide variety of not-for-profit organizations that focus on issues like safety, educational opportunities, employment and health.
Q:Is there a primary focus for fund recipients?
A: Our overall goal is to help women and children develop self esteem and become self-reliant.
Q: How large is the AFFW endowment?
A: As of January 1, 2008, it has grown to more than $1.3 million.
Q: How can one person make a difference for women and children?
A: One person can make a huge differenceespecially you. You can help by identifying the needs of women and girls in your community and awarding grants to improve our entire community.
Q: Why give to AFFW rather than directly to charities?
A: Because:
- You'll become part of the women's philanthrophy movement
- Donations to the endowment will provide income for grants forever
- Women can determine where AFFW grants are distributed
- AFFW cares about your feelings and opinions
- People who give to AFFW are breaking ground and setting precedent
